Upper Elementary: 4th-7th Grade Classes

Welcome! SWIA Elementary Upper Grades Program exists to provide a quality academic education that will nourish and enrich your child’s natural curiosity and set their character on a GODly path toward knowing CHRIST and becoming more like HIM. Our school curriculum is intentionally structured to weave scripture, worship and prayer into scheduled, everyday lessons and activities.

Theology
Structured time for Bible study is held each day to teach students GOD’s word and further their understanding of the message of JESUS CHRIST. Teachers use a combination of videos, discussion, and artwork to teach students foundational tenets about the Christian faith. We believe using scripture as our first source of wisdom helps students become excited about GOD’s Word and poises students to walk in HIS wisdom.

Worship
Students attend worship and prayer every morning to begin the school day focused on our LORD. Worship time is student-led, with students helping bring the Bible Verse on a rotational basis. Peer-led worship gives a meaningful opportunity for students to pray for one another and and worship GOD together daily.

Dual Language Acquisition
Each semester includes a foreign language focus, centering on Spanish and Chinese(Mandarin). During language time, students practice conversation and pronunciation with a native language teacher, as well as learn the customs and cultures of the focus language. Taking time to experience other language and culture is used both academically and as a teaching tool in how we are called to reach out and be friends to all nations!]

Project Based Learning
The SWIA teaching model emphasizes a practical, real-life learning experience for students by encouraging critical thinking, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. As an application for developing young minds, SWIA Upper Grades students undertake quarterly class projects, which they are responsible to research, design, budget, and maintain.

A recent example project is the design of a class aquaponics system. The given class mission statement is to learn how to provide food for those who do not have money enough to get their own food, with a goal to expand from a test system into a full greenhouse. This project helps students explore various aspects money, plants, fish, ecosystems, pH levels, and the nitrogen cycle, as well as learning the usefulness of knowledge as a tool to help others.

2020-23 Project-Based Learning Assignments

Q1 – Aquaponics
Q2 – Raspberry Pi (Coding)
Q3 – Robotics
Q4 – Greenhouse

STEAM Learning
SWIA encourages early STEAM learning by adapting advanced concepts on grade-level, which is designed to stretch and meet the curiosity level of the child.

Upper Grades students as young as 2nd grade will experience bi-weekly Biochemistry classes, where fun activity such as Bingo and molecule kits are used to introduce high school curriculum content such elements and bonding sites in a fun and hands-on environment.

Fine Arts & Specials
Upper Grades Students participate in a rotation of Special Classes. Weekly Rotational Specials are crafted to encompass a wide area of creativity and intelligence, including Physical Education, Art, Technology, Health & Home Economics and Music!

Field Trips
Students travel for off campus field trips once per quarter. Destinations are chosen to complement a current or past academic focus which helps to associate and apply many of the experiences they have in the classroom with a real-world example outside of school! The aim for field trips is to help stimulate interest and encourage improvement in a given area of study for the year while simultaneously having a great time and building a lasting fun memory for the students to carry with them.
